Mexican Filmmakers

Many of these Mexican filmakers are considered industry icons, and their groundbreaking films are considered required viewing for anybody interested in Mexican cinema. Additionally, a variety of genres are covered here, with excellent casts in every position.

Top five Mexican filmmakers of all time:

1. Alejandro González Iñárritu

Better known for making : Amores Perros (2000), 21 Grams (2003), Babel (2006)… and others. His primary type of work consists of classic psychological drama films that explore the human condition. 

2. Alfonso Cuarón

Known for fils like: A Little Princess (1995),  Great Expectations (1998), Y tu mamá también (2001), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004),  Children of Men (2006), Roma (2018) and many others.

3. Guillermo del Toro

His magnum opus Pan’s Labyrinth (2006),  Hellboy (2004), and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008),  The Shape of Water (2017) and Pinnochio (2022).  His filmography is kind a legendary. perhaps u may know some of this?

4. Emilio Fernández

Maybe only known by my grandmother, but according to my research he was one of the most prolific film directors of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema in the 1940s and 1950s. 

5. Carlos Carrera

Mexican writer and director of films. El crimen del Padre Amaro (2002), that received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. He directed Backyard in 2009, and Ana y Bruno (2017) that is commonly cited among Mexico’s greatest animated features.
