Famous Mexican filmmaker and producer who pioneered the early 21st-century Mexican film revival with his films, which frequently have interconnected stories and a nonlinear narrative

González Iñárritu gained fame as a DJ at Mexico’s highest-rated radio station in 1984, piecing together playlists into a vague storyline. He attributed his interest in storytelling to this experience.

Iñárritu flew to the United States to learn filmmaking. Amores perros (2000), González Iñárritu’s feature directorial debut, was based on one of their early ideas, which involved three interrelated stories set in a gloomy yet realistic Mexico City.

Iñárritu became the first Latin American to serve as president of the jury for the 72nd Cannes Film Festival. Iñárritu and Mexican filmmakers Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro are known in the film industry as “The Three Amigos”.
